## Singapore PM's Salary Increase
Singapore's Prime Minister, Lawrence Wong, is set to receive a significant salary increase, making him the highest-paid political leader globally. His annual salary will rise by S$1.4 million, reaching a new benchmark of S$3.6 million, equivalent to $2.8 million. This amount is approximately seven times the salary of the US president.
## Comparison with Other Leaders
Wong's new salary far surpasses those of other world leaders. For instance, the US president earns $400,000 annually, while leaders of Switzerland, Australia, and Germany earn several hundred thousand dollars each year. In contrast, the Prime Minister of India earns about $23,000, and the Prime Minister of Nepal earns around $6,500.
## Donation to Charity
Despite the increase, Wong has pledged to donate the entire salary hike to charity over the next five years. This decision comes amid a broader revision of political salaries in Singapore, the first in 15 years.
## Broader Salary Revisions
The salary adjustments will also affect other political officeholders in Singapore. The benchmark for a minister at the lowest grade will increase from S$1.1 million to S$1.8 million, while the deputy prime minister's salary will rise from S$1.87 million to S$3.06 million. Ministers' salaries will vary based on their roles and responsibilities.
## Justification for High Salaries
Singapore defends its high political salaries as necessary to attract top talent and maintain high governance standards. The salary formula is based on the median income of the top 1,000 earners in the country, with a 40% discount to account for the nature of political service. Wong emphasized the importance of competitive salaries to encourage capable individuals to join politics, ensuring strong leadership for Singapore.
