## New Family Charter Unveiled
Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in his role as Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, has introduced a Family Charter aimed at safeguarding children following parental separation. This initiative aligns with the UAE's focus on family welfare during the Year of Family.
## Focus on Child Welfare
The charter emphasizes the importance of maintaining a stable environment for children, ensuring both parents remain actively involved in their upbringing. It stresses that divorce should not affect the shared responsibilities of parenthood or the child's need for a secure and nurturing environment.
## Parental Responsibilities
Parents are required to collaborate on their children's moral, religious, and educational upbringing. The custodial parent must keep the other informed about the child's academic and health status. Both parents are expected to consult on significant decisions, such as education and medical care.
## Framework for Cooperation
The document outlines obligations for both parents, including respecting each other in front of the children and avoiding discussions about the reasons for divorce in their presence. It prohibits using children's legal rights as leverage in disputes.
## Dispute Resolution
In case of disagreements, the charter encourages amicable resolutions. If unresolved, matters are referred to the Family Guidance Centre before potentially going to court. The charter is presented to parents post-separation for them to agree on its terms.
