Wildfires, heatwaves endanger air quality, health: UN

## Air Pollution and Climate Change

The United Nations' World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has raised concerns about the increasing threat of wildfires and heatwaves on air quality and public health. These events are contributing to higher levels of microscopic pollutants in the air, which pose significant health risks and exacerbate climate change.

## Health Impact of Toxic Particles

The WMO report emphasizes that smoke from wildfires contains highly toxic particles that can penetrate deep into the lungs and bloodstream. These particles, known as PM2.5, are more harmful than those from other sources like vehicle emissions. The report suggests that current models may underestimate the mortality rates linked to wildfire smoke by up to 93%.

## Ozone and Microplastics Concerns

Ground-level ozone, which increases during heatwaves, is another pollutant with serious health implications, potentially leading to thousands of premature deaths annually. Additionally, the presence of microplastics in the atmosphere is growing, with significant amounts found in both land and ocean environments. These particles can affect ecosystems and contribute to climate change by altering atmospheric conditions.

## Need for Coordinated Policies

The WMO stresses the importance of integrated policies addressing both air quality and climate change. As these issues are interconnected, tackling them separately is ineffective. Enhanced monitoring of pollutants like black carbon and microplastics is crucial to understanding and mitigating their impacts on health and the environment.
