Why these donkeys get five-star care and give free milk

## A Unique Sanctuary in Lebanon

In eastern Lebanon, Hussein Amhaz operates a unique sanctuary for donkeys, offering them a lifestyle akin to five-star treatment. Located in the town of Labweh, the farm is home to 24 donkeys, each receiving specialized care, including a dedicated team for feeding, cleaning, and regular veterinary visits. Amhaz ensures that none of the donkeys are rented out for work, prioritizing their well-being.

## The Origin of the Sanctuary

The sanctuary's story began over a decade ago when Amhaz sought remedies for a family member with a weakened immune system. Discovering the nutritional benefits of donkey milk, he initially purchased one female donkey. Over time, this grew into a herd that once numbered nearly 50.

## Free Milk for Those in Need

Despite the high market value of donkey milk, which can reach $90 for 250ml in Europe, Amhaz distributes the milk for free. The farm produces about seven bottles weekly, and Amhaz asks only for prayers in return, honoring deceased family members.

## Challenges and Commitment

Running the sanctuary is costly, with expenses for food, care, and medical treatment. Amhaz has faced challenges, including a poisoning incident that reduced his herd by 20 donkeys. Nevertheless, he remains committed to maintaining the sanctuary as a charitable endeavor in memory of his family.
