## UN Warns of Intensifying El Nino
The United Nations has issued a warning about an exceptionally strong El Nino event expected to develop in the coming months. This weather phenomenon, which affects global climate patterns, is predicted to be the most intense since record-keeping began four decades ago.
## Potential Global Consequences
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) forecasts that El Nino will peak towards the end of the year, with effects lasting into 2027. This event is likely to cause significant changes in rainfall and temperature, leading to increased risks of floods, droughts, and extreme heat worldwide.
## Rising Ocean Temperatures
El Nino is characterized by warming sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. This warming can lead to higher global temperatures, as heat from the oceans is released into the atmosphere. The current El Nino has already contributed to record-breaking temperatures in 2024, and further increases are expected.
## Urgent Preparations Needed
WMO officials have urged sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and water management to prepare for the potential impacts. The organization emphasizes that while El Nino is a natural occurrence, its effects are being intensified by ongoing climate change.
## Historical Context and Future Outlook
El Nino events typically occur every two to seven years and last for several months. The current event is classified as "very strong," with sea surface temperature anomalies expected to exceed 3.6°C above normal. This surpasses previous strong El Ninos in 1997-98 and 2015-16.
The UN's International Organization for Migration has requested $110 million to aid 4.9 million people potentially affected by the severe impacts of this El Nino.
