## New Economic Measures
Cuba has launched a series of significant free-market reforms aimed at addressing its ongoing economic crisis. These changes allow foreign investment in real estate and enable domestic companies to import and export goods without state involvement.
## Foreign Investment and Private Sector Growth
The reforms, announced in June, come as Cuba faces pressure from a US fuel blockade. The government has introduced 176 measures to open the economy to private investment across sectors such as banking, tourism, and agriculture. Notably, private Cuban firms can now directly collaborate with foreign investors and manage overseas bank accounts.
## Expansion of Private Enterprises
The new regulations also permit the creation of private companies with more than 100 employees and the establishment of privately owned banks, pharmacies, and gas stations. These measures are part of a broader strategy to bolster the private sector, which already plays a significant role in the economy.
## Government's Stance
President Miguel Diaz-Canel has emphasized that these reforms are not a shift towards capitalism but rather an effort to preserve socialism. The private sector is increasingly filling gaps left by the struggling state, with over 15,000 small and medium-sized enterprises currently operating in Cuba, employing a substantial portion of the workforce.
