‘More painful than social media’: Dubai-based Nepali expat recalls flood rescue

## Firsthand Experience of Flood Devastation

Ramesh Shrestha, a Nepali expatriate residing in Dubai, recently shared his experiences of the devastating floods in Nepal. Initially, he learned about the disaster through social media and messages from friends, but witnessing the destruction firsthand was far more harrowing.

## Humanitarian Mission

While on a business trip to Nepal, Shrestha joined a team of 35 to 40 people from the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) to assist flood-affected communities. They traveled to the Trishuli and Rasuwa regions, delivering essential supplies such as tents, mattresses, and food.

## Challenges in Relief Efforts

The team faced significant challenges, including destroyed roads and limited communication services, which complicated rescue operations. Despite these obstacles, they managed to distribute aid to around 300 families and relocate another 300 to safer locations.

## Lessons Learned

Shrestha emphasized the importance of preparedness for future disasters, advocating for better early-warning systems and emergency plans. He believes that proactive measures can save lives and reduce suffering.

## Continued Support

The relief efforts continue, with Shrestha and the Nepali community remaining committed to supporting those affected. He personally contributed over NPR 500,000 to the cause and expressed gratitude to the UAE government for its support during this difficult time.

## A Call for Unity and Compassion

Reflecting on his experience, Shrestha highlighted the need for humanity, unity, and compassion in times of crisis. He urged communities and governments to work together to protect lives and support those in need.
