Al Taawun Tunnel: When will Sharjah’s new Dubai link open and how will it cut traffic?

## Al Taawun Tunnel Opening Timeline

The Al Taawun Tunnel, a significant infrastructure project aimed at reducing traffic congestion between Sharjah and Dubai, is set to open its first phase in November 2026. The entire project is expected to be completed by February 2027.

## Project Details

The tunnel, located at Al Taawun Square, features three lanes in each direction and is designed to accommodate approximately 4,000 vehicles per hour during peak times. This development is part of a larger initiative to enhance major traffic routes connecting the two emirates.

## Impact on Traffic

The new tunnel is anticipated to cut waiting times by up to 85%, significantly easing congestion at one of the busiest traffic bottlenecks. By allowing vehicles to bypass the surface-level roundabout, the tunnel aims to facilitate smoother and faster travel between Sharjah and Dubai.

## Additional Developments

Alongside the tunnel, the project includes connecting roads to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Street and Emirates Road, further improving traffic flow in the area. This is expected to alleviate pressure on existing roads and enhance connectivity for residents in nearby communities.

## Temporary Changes

The construction required the temporary removal of the Al Taawun Roundabout monument. It will be restored once the tunnel is completed, as confirmed by Sharjah's Ruler, His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi.
