India’s power demand is surging, but some solar energy is going to waste

## Rising Power Demand and Solar Energy Waste

India is experiencing a significant increase in power demand, particularly during the summer months when air conditioning usage peaks. Despite this, a substantial amount of solar energy is being wasted due to grid limitations. Over the past 15 months, nearly 11 terawatt-hours of solar power, enough to supply around 10 million homes, have been curtailed.

## Challenges in Energy Transition

India is rapidly expanding its clean energy capacity, with solar power playing a major role. However, the country faces challenges in fully utilizing this renewable energy due to insufficient transmission and storage infrastructure. The existing power grid struggles to accommodate the fluctuating supply from renewable sources, leading to curtailment of solar and wind energy.

## Infrastructure and Policy Needs

Experts highlight the need for more transmission lines and energy storage solutions to efficiently distribute and store renewable energy. The current infrastructure is unable to handle the high concentration of solar power in regions like Gujarat and Rajasthan, causing congestion and energy wastage.

## Future Prospects and Solutions

India aims to increase its clean energy capacity to 500 gigawatts by 2030, with a significant portion coming from non-fossil sources. To achieve this, the country needs to enhance its storage capabilities, with plans to expand battery storage and pumped-storage capacity. These measures are crucial to reducing reliance on coal and ensuring a stable energy supply.
