## Park Chan-wook's New Role
Renowned South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook has been appointed as the jury president for the 79th Cannes Film Festival. He takes over from French actor Juliette Binoche, who previously led the jury that awarded the Palme d'Or to Jafar Panahi's film.
## A History with Cannes
Park Chan-wook has a longstanding relationship with the Cannes Film Festival. His debut feature, "Oldboy," premiered there in 2004 and won the Grand Prize, becoming a cult classic. Over the years, he has returned to the festival with films like "Thirst," which won the Jury Prize in 2009, and "Decision to Leave," which earned him the Best Director award in 2022.
## First South Korean Jury President
Park's appointment marks a historic moment as he becomes the first South Korean to preside over the Cannes jury. Previously, Hong Kong's Wong Kar-wai was the only Asian director to have held this position, doing so two decades ago.
## Anticipation for the Role
Expressing his excitement, Park Chan-wook looks forward to the unique experience of leading the jury. He describes the process of watching films and engaging in discussions with fellow jury members as a "double, voluntary confinement" that he eagerly anticipates.
