Sharjah to open first phase of Al Taawun Tunnel in November

## Al Taawun Tunnel Project

Sharjah is set to open the initial phase of the Al Taawun Tunnel in November 2026. This development aims to alleviate traffic congestion on one of the emirate's busiest routes to Dubai. The tunnel, located at Al Taawun Square, will feature three lanes in each direction, accommodating approximately 4,000 vehicles per hour during peak times.

## Completion Timeline

The entire project is expected to be finished by February 2027. The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority has been working continuously to ensure timely completion, with construction progress reported at 20% as of July.

## Broader Infrastructure Improvements

This tunnel is part of a larger initiative to enhance major traffic corridors between Sharjah and Dubai. The program includes upgrades around Al Taawun, Al Khan, and key intersections leading to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. Additionally, a significant road project is underway at the intersection of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Street and Mleiha Road, involving a three-lane bridge costing Dh140 million.

## Sustainable Transport Initiatives

Sharjah is also focusing on sustainable transport solutions. The emirate is expanding its fleet with electric, hybrid, and natural-gas vehicles. Electric buses are being equipped with AI systems to improve safety and efficiency. Furthermore, the Bus on Demand service is being extended to areas like Muwaileh Commercial and University City, enhancing public transport accessibility.

## Technological Advancements

AI technology is being integrated into public transport, with intercity buses and taxis equipped with cameras to monitor road conditions and driver behavior. These advancements aim to enhance safety and service quality for commuters.
