More than 1,000 dead from catastrophic Nepal-China floods

## Catastrophic Flooding in Nepal and China

The recent floods in Nepal and China have resulted in a death toll exceeding 1,000. Nepal's disaster agency reported 987 fatalities, with 3,916 individuals still missing, including 583 foreigners. In China, 16 deaths have been confirmed.

## Rescue Efforts Underway

Emergency teams are using helicopters and other aircraft to access isolated areas where infrastructure has been destroyed. So far, 11,814 people have been rescued in Nepal.

## Origin of the Disaster

The flooding began on August 26 due to a glacial collapse in the Himalayas. This event sent massive amounts of rock, ice, and water into the valleys, causing severe downstream flooding. The collapse was so intense it registered as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event.

## Ongoing Challenges

Authorities are still searching for thousands of missing individuals. A significant concern is locating around 900 workers from 12 hydropower projects, with approximately 500 believed to be trapped in tunnels. Rescuers are prioritizing these efforts while also assisting survivors in affected regions.
