Oil shock is turning Filipinos electric: EV sales jump 300%, even as overall car market shrinks

## Rising EV Sales in the Philippines

In the first seven months of 2026, the Philippine electric vehicle (EV) market experienced a significant boost, with sales of electrified vehicles, including hybrids and battery-electric models, increasing by 136.4% to 38,286 units. This surge contrasts with a 10.2% decline in overall vehicle sales, which fell to 241,725 units during the same period.

## Impact of Fuel Prices

The sharp rise in fuel costs, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions, has prompted many Filipino consumers to reconsider their vehicle choices. As a result, pure battery EV sales soared by over 300%, while plug-in hybrid sales saw an impressive 2,363.2% increase. Conventional hybrids also grew by 55.9%, maintaining their status as the largest segment within the electrified vehicle category.

## Economic Considerations

The economic benefits of switching to EVs are becoming increasingly apparent. For instance, motorists spending around ₱3,000 weekly on gasoline could potentially save up to ₱2,100 per week by transitioning to a full EV. This shift in consumer behavior is driven more by cost savings than environmental concerns.

## Infrastructure Challenges

Despite the growing interest in EVs, the lack of charging infrastructure remains a significant barrier, particularly outside major urban centers. The Electric Vehicle Association of the Philippines (EVAP) is advocating for expanded charging networks to support broader adoption. Currently, the country has 1,569 charging points, with most concentrated in Metro Manila.

## Future Prospects

Efforts are underway to enhance EV infrastructure and update relevant legislation to accommodate the evolving market. The goal is to establish a comprehensive national charging network, starting with major cities and gradually expanding to smaller regions. This development is crucial for sustaining the momentum of EV adoption in the Philippines.
