## Citizenship Revocation
The United States has revoked the citizenship of Gurmeet Singh, an Indian-origin man, following his conviction for rape and kidnapping. The US District Court for the Eastern District of New York ruled that Singh had fraudulently obtained his citizenship by concealing these crimes during the naturalisation process.
## Details of the Case
Singh entered the US in 1992 and became a permanent resident in 2000. In 2011, just before applying for US citizenship, he committed a violent crime against a female passenger while working as a taxi driver. Despite this, he successfully became a US citizen in October 2011.
## Legal Proceedings
After his naturalisation, Singh was convicted in New York for first-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping, receiving a 20-year prison sentence. The Justice Department filed a denaturalisation complaint against him in February, leading to the recent court decision.
## Official Statements
US Attorney General Todd Blanche emphasized that American citizenship cannot shield criminals. Assistant Attorney General Brett A. Shumate highlighted the importance of maintaining the integrity of the citizenship process. The case was prosecuted by the Justice Department's Civil Division and the Eastern District of New York.
