Gunfire and explosions shake Niamey after attackers target airport and presidency

## Attack on Key Locations in Niamey

Niamey, the capital of Niger, experienced intense gunfire and explosions early Saturday. The attackers targeted Diori Hamani International Airport and attempted to breach the security perimeter of the presidential palace, according to witnesses and a security source.

## Military Base Also Targeted

In addition to the airport and presidency, Base 101, a significant military installation near the airport, was also attacked. Bana Wagana Ibrahim, a member of Niger's Consultative Council, reported that the defense forces had regained control of the situation.

## Ongoing Security Challenges

Niger has been under military rule since a coup in July 2023, which ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The current government, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has shifted alliances towards Russia, similar to neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso. These countries form the Alliance of Sahel States and continue to face threats from groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State.

## Recent History of Violence

This attack is part of a series of violent incidents in Niger this year, including a deadly assault in March that killed at least 44 civilians. The capital's airport and military facilities have become frequent targets, reflecting a shift in violence that was previously more common outside Niamey.
