Organisation of Islamic Cooperation elects Mauritanian diplomat as new secretary-general

## New Leadership for OIC

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has elected Mauritanian diplomat Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed as its new secretary-general. He will take over from Chad's Hussein Ibrahim Taha, whose term concludes in November 2026.

## Extensive Experience

Ould Cheikh Ahmed brings over 30 years of experience in international diplomacy, having worked with the United Nations and in various challenging political and security situations. His leadership is expected to guide the OIC, headquartered in Jeddah, through its next phase.

## Selection Process

The OIC's secretary-general is chosen by the Council of Foreign Ministers from its 57 member states. The selection process emphasizes equitable geographical distribution and rotation, without a fixed sequence among the Arab, African, and Asian groupings.

## African Union Support

Earlier this year, the African Union endorsed Ould Cheikh Ahmed's candidacy for the 2027-2032 term, recognizing Mauritania's position within the Northern Africa region. His election marks a significant moment for Mauritania, placing a diplomat from the country at the helm of one of the largest intergovernmental organizations, which includes Muslim-majority nations across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia.
