Nepal-Tibet landslide death toll rises to 160: Hundreds missing, including foreign tourists — what we know, and don't know

## Catastrophic Landslide Strikes

A devastating landslide at the Nepal-China border has resulted in at least 160 deaths, with hundreds more missing. The disaster occurred on Wednesday morning in the Rasuwa district, near Tibet, when a massive ice and rock collapse triggered a flash flood.

## Impact and Rescue Efforts

The flood swept through Himalayan valleys, destroying villages, roads, and bridges. Nepalese authorities have confirmed 157 deaths on their side, while Chinese reports account for three fatalities in Tibet. Rescue operations are ongoing, but efforts are hampered by destroyed infrastructure and challenging terrain.

## Foreign Nationals Among the Missing

Among the 403 people reported missing are 341 foreign nationals, including tourists and pilgrims. The missing include 133 Indians, 47 Americans, 33 Britons, 34 Australians, and 24 Canadians. Eight South Korean workers at a hydropower project are also unaccounted for.

## Misinterpreted Seismic Activity

Initially, the U.S. Geological Survey recorded what seemed to be a magnitude-4.4 earthquake. However, this was later identified as seismic activity caused by the landslide itself, equivalent to a magnitude-5.2 event.

## Ongoing Challenges

The disaster highlights the region's vulnerability due to its steep slopes and glacial activity. Scientists are investigating the exact cause, which may involve a glacial lake or glacier collapse. The situation remains critical as authorities continue search and rescue operations.
