## Italy Joins Growing Opposition
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has announced it will no longer support Gianni Infantino's bid for reelection as FIFA President. This decision aligns Italy with a growing number of countries opposing Infantino's leadership.
## Governance Concerns
The FIGC cited concerns over Infantino's recent governance initiatives and his aborted plan to sell World Cup stakes to private investors. These actions have led to accusations of "deception" from three continental confederations and threats of a boycott from UEFA.
## European Federations' Stance
FIGC President Giovanni Malagò emphasized the importance of a soccer model based on merit and fan centrality, expressing a commitment to work with UEFA and other European federations. Romania's soccer federation also withdrew support, calling for a leader who can inspire unity and trust.
## Broader Backlash
Several other countries, including England, Wales, Ireland, and Norway, have also withdrawn support for Infantino. Norway, along with five Nordic countries, has publicly stated a loss of confidence in his leadership.
## Infantino's Position
Despite the backlash, Infantino, who has been FIFA President since 2016, was previously expected to run unopposed for reelection in Morocco next year. The deadline for challengers to enter the race is November 18. Some federations, including Morocco and Qatar, continue to support him.
