Two German airport workers die of malaria from plane mosquito

## Malaria Outbreak at Frankfurt Airport

Two employees at Frankfurt Airport have died after contracting malaria, believed to have been transmitted by a mosquito that arrived on a plane. The city's health authority confirmed the fatalities, while four other workers are currently receiving treatment in the hospital.

## Source of Infection

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) suspects that an Anopheles mosquito, which can carry malaria, was imported via an aircraft. This type of malaria outbreak is rare in Germany, with the last known incident occurring in 2023.

## Response Measures

In response to the outbreak, mosquito traps have been set up at the airport to prevent further infections. The captured mosquitoes will be sent to the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp for genetic analysis to determine their origin.

## Malaria Overview

Malaria is a disease caused by parasites spread through Anopheles mosquitoes. Symptoms include nausea, headaches, and severe fever. While the disease is treatable, early diagnosis is crucial for recovery. Malaria remains a significant health issue globally, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where it causes numerous deaths annually.
