## Significance and Rituals

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival celebrating the bond between siblings. The name itself signifies protection and bonding, with "Raksha" meaning protection and "Bandhan" meaning bond. Traditionally, a sister ties a rakhi, a sacred thread, on her brother's wrist, symbolizing her love and prayers for his well-being. In return, the brother gives her a gift, promising to protect her. Over time, this tradition has expanded to include non-biological siblings and friends.

The festival is observed according to the Hindu lunar calendar, usually in July or August, during the full moon of the Shravana month. This year, the auspicious time for tying the rakhi is between 5:57 am and 9:48 am.

## Origin Stories

Raksha Bandhan's origins are steeped in mythology. One popular tale from the Mahabharata involves Lord Krishna and Draupadi. When Krishna injured himself, Draupadi tore a piece of her clothing to bandage his wound. Touched by her gesture, Krishna vowed to protect her, which he later did in a moment of need.

## Rituals and Celebrations

The ritual begins with both siblings bathing, symbolizing purity and sincerity. The sister prepares a thali, or plate, containing a rakhi, a diya, grains of rice, kumkum, sweets, and water. She applies kumkum on her brother's forehead, adds rice grains, and performs an aarti by moving the thali in a circular motion around him. After tying the rakhi, they exchange sweets and gifts, reinforcing their bond.
