## New Environmental Regulations
Saudi Arabia has implemented stringent measures to protect its marine and coastal environments. Under new regulations, fines for marine pollution can reach up to SR5 million. These rules were approved by Abdulrahman Al Fadley, the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture.
## Strict Penalties and Requirements
The penalties are based on the severity of environmental damage and the affected area. Offenders must also repair any damage caused and pay compensation. Immediate reporting of oil spills, leaks, or other harmful incidents to the National Centre for Environmental Compliance is mandatory.
## Prohibited Activities
The regulations prohibit discharging untreated wastewater and dumping hazardous substances into marine areas. Hunting marine wildlife with explosives or toxic substances is banned, as is fishing with illegal equipment or during breeding seasons. Accidental catches of protected species must be released unharmed, and any injuries reported.
## Protection of Sensitive Habitats
Dropping anchors in unauthorized locations, especially on coral reefs and seagrass beds, is forbidden. Activities like marine tourism and coastal mining require environmental permits. Introducing invasive species and damaging coral reefs or turtle nesting sites are also prohibited.
## Enhanced Wildlife Protection
The regulations aim to safeguard wildlife, coral reefs, and coastal vegetation, and improve responses to environmental emergencies. These measures reflect Saudi Arabia's commitment to preserving its natural ecosystems.
