UAE enters Suhail season, but fog keeps famous star out of sight

## Suhail Season Begins

The UAE has entered the Suhail season, a period traditionally marking the gradual end of intense summer heat. This season, which typically starts around August 24, is associated with milder weather across the Arabian Peninsula.

## Fog Obscures Canopus

Despite the start of Suhail season, the star Canopus, known locally as Suhail, has not been visible due to foggy conditions. This star, which appears near the south-eastern horizon before sunrise, is an important seasonal marker in the region.

## Signs of Seasonal Change

According to Ibrahim Al Jarwan from the Emirates Astronomy Society, signs of the changing season include cooler water and ground temperatures at dawn, soil retaining moisture, and camels needing less water. Additionally, certain seabirds like the sallal bird begin to arrive, and samr trees start turning green.

## Agricultural and Livestock Preparations

During this period, farmers prepare for the upcoming agricultural season, and livestock owners trim sheep hooves to maintain animal health. Fish also start moving closer to the coast as sea temperatures decline.

## Astronomical Significance

Suhail, or Canopus, is the second-brightest star in the night sky and can be seen about 40 minutes before sunrise under favorable conditions. Its appearance marks the beginning of the first 10 days of Al Safri in the traditional Al Drour calendar, a system used to track seasonal changes in the region.
