## Settlement Details
TikTok has agreed to a $400 million settlement with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) over allegations of violating children's privacy laws. The settlement resolves a lawsuit filed in 2024, accusing the company of collecting data from children without parental consent.
## Payment Structure
Under the agreement, TikTok will pay $300 million immediately, with an additional $100 million to be paid after a previous consent decree against its predecessor, Musical.ly, is vacated.
## DOJ's Statement
US Associate Attorney General Stanley E. Woodward Jr. emphasized that the settlement is a significant win for protecting children online. He stated that the resolution ensures companies handling children's data comply with legal standards.
## Changes in TikTok's Structure
Since the lawsuit, TikTok has restructured its US operations, forming a joint venture with investors like Oracle and Silver Lake. This move aims to address privacy concerns and improve compliance.
## Broader Context
The settlement comes amid increasing scrutiny of social media platforms regarding children's safety and privacy. Other companies, such as Meta Platforms, are also facing legal challenges under the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
