From finding support to creating it: How the UAE helped this mother find a new path for her neurodivergent child

## A Life-Changing Move

Robie Torre-Gonzales, a Filipino expat, faced a tough decision when offered a job in Dubai. Leaving her promising career in the Philippines and her two young children was difficult, especially with her husband already working in Qatar. However, the financial and emotional challenges of raising a neurodivergent child prompted her to accept the opportunity in 2009.

## Navigating New Challenges

Two years after moving, Gonzales brought her children to the UAE, where she encountered limited support for neurodivergent children. In 2011, resources and conversations around inclusion were scarce, prompting her to connect with other parents to create a support network.

## Growth and Change

Over the years, the UAE has evolved in its approach to inclusion, with increased awareness and government initiatives. Gonzales witnessed these changes firsthand, benefiting from the country's supportive environment.

## Career Development

Gonzales' career flourished in Dubai, advancing from a junior employee to an HR Manager. Her success allowed her to provide a better life for her family, including quality education for her children.

## Turning Setbacks into Opportunities

The pandemic ended her 11-year corporate career, but it also led her to entrepreneurship. She founded People Bureau International and Senyara Learning, focusing on HR consultancy and learning support, respectively.

## Giving Back

Gonzales actively contributes to the community, serving as president of FILHR, a Filipino HR group in the UAE. She offers career counseling and professional development, emphasizing the importance of sharing knowledge and support.

## Embracing Change

Gonzales' journey highlights the importance of adaptability and finding purpose. Her experiences in the UAE have not only shaped her career but also her approach to supporting others, demonstrating that unexpected paths can lead to fulfilling outcomes.
