## Heatwave Impact Across Europe

Europe experienced a severe summer with over 30,000 excess deaths attributed to intense heatwaves and drought conditions. Provisional data from EuroMomo indicates that between mid-July and mid-August, the continent saw more than 32,000 additional deaths.

## Country-Specific Toll

Germany, the most populous EU country, recorded 14,000 heat-related deaths by early August, marking a record since 2016. France reported 7,300 excess deaths during the heatwave period from late May to July 22. Spain experienced nearly 4,500 deaths due to heat from June to mid-August, the highest since 2022.

In England, heat-related deaths reached 2,877 in May and June, nearing the 2022 record of 2,985. Belgium saw 2,570 excess deaths between mid-June and mid-July, with updates expected in September. The Netherlands reported 968 excess deaths in late June to early July.

## Other Affected Regions

Austria recorded 396 heat-related deaths in June, a first for the month. Portugal saw over 600 excess deaths from mid-June to late July. These figures highlight the widespread impact of the heatwaves across Europe.

## Ongoing Monitoring

EuroMomo's estimates are subject to revision, and the total death toll may change as more data becomes available. The monitoring includes official statistics from 23 European countries, excluding parts of Eastern Europe.
