## Diverse Field of Candidates
Eight individuals are in the race to replace Antonio Guterres as the United Nations Secretary-General. The candidates include five women and three men, reflecting a diverse pool of backgrounds and experiences.
## Leading Contenders
Rebeca Grynspan from Costa Rica, who previously served as the country's vice president and currently heads the UN trade and development body, is considered a front-runner. She is known for her diplomatic achievements, including the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
Argentina's Rafael Grossi, head of the UN nuclear watchdog, is another prominent candidate. His experience with nuclear issues, particularly in Iran and Ukraine, positions him as a strong contender.
## Other Notable Candidates
Michelle Bachelet, former president of Chile and UN rights chief, is also in the running. Her tenure as rights chief was marked by tensions with countries like China.
Maria Fernanda Espinosa from Ecuador, a former foreign minister and UN General Assembly president, advocates for UN reform and conflict prevention.
Guyana's Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, a former foreign minister and current UN ambassador, emphasizes restoring the UN's global credibility.
Ivonne A-Baki from Ecuador, known for her diplomatic efforts in the Gulf and US, is another candidate. She has a history of mediating international conflicts.
Macky Sall, the former president of Senegal, is the only candidate from outside Latin America. He focuses on the connection between peace and development.
Olara Otunnu from Uganda, with a background in children's rights and conflict resolution, rounds out the list of candidates.
## Selection Process
The selection of the UN Secretary-General involves a vote by the 15-member Security Council, where a candidate must secure nine votes without facing a veto from any of the five permanent members: the US, UK, China, France, and Russia.
