The Panama Canal Authority announced a reduction in the number of ships passing through the canal starting next month. This decision is a response to a severe drought in Central America, exacerbated by the El Nino weather phenomenon, which has led to decreased rainfall in the region.

El Nino, known for warming ocean surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific, is causing significant changes in global weather patterns, including reduced rainfall. This year's El Nino is expected to be one of the strongest recorded, impacting water levels in the canal's watershed.

## New Shipping Limits

Beginning September 3, the canal will decrease its daily ship traffic from 36 to 34 vessels, with a further reduction to 32 ships by September 15. The canal, which facilitates about 5% of global maritime trade and 40% of US container traffic, relies on rainwater from two artificial lakes.

## Conservation Measures

In addition to reducing ship numbers, the canal has implemented water conservation strategies, such as adjusting the maximum draft for large vessels. These measures aim to ensure the long-term sustainability of this crucial trade route.
