Japan arrests Mexican traveller after 200 lizards found hidden in socks at Tokyo airport

## Incident at Tokyo Airport

A 23-year-old Mexican man was detained at Tokyo's Haneda Airport after authorities discovered approximately 200 lizards hidden in his luggage. The reptiles were concealed in 22 pairs of socks and other clothing items.

## Details of the Arrest

The suspect, identified as Daniel Isaac Velasco Baltazar, arrived from South Korea. Customs officials, acting on a tip-off about potential reptile smuggling, conducted a search of his baggage. During the inspection, one lizard was found deceased.

## Endangered Species Involved

Among the lizards, nine were identified as Mexican alligator lizards, a species listed as endangered and subject to international trade regulations under CITES. The suspect admitted to importing the animals without the necessary permits.

## Financial Aspects

The suspect reportedly purchased the lizards in Mexico for prices ranging from 560 to 750 yen each. In Japan, some species could be sold for as much as 100,000 yen each.

## Ongoing Investigation

Authorities believe the lizards were intended for sale and display. Investigations are ongoing to determine the species of the remaining reptiles and further implications of this illegal trade. This case underscores the broader issue of illegal wildlife trafficking.
