## Supreme Court's Decision
Indian expatriates in the UAE and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have expressed approval of the Indian Supreme Court's recent decision to regulate airfares. This move is seen as a potential relief for those burdened by high ticket prices when traveling to and from India.
## Court Proceedings
On August 17, the Supreme Court reviewed draft rules proposed by the government to address the issue of fluctuating airfares. The court has given the government three weeks to finalize these rules, with a follow-up hearing scheduled for September 7.
## Community Involvement
The Pravasi Legal Cell (PLC), an organization advocating for the rights of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), has been actively involved in this case. The petition, led by social activist S. Laxminarayanan, calls for an independent regulator to ensure transparency and protect passengers from unpredictable airfare hikes.
## Impact on Expatriates
TN Krishnakumar, President of PLC Dubai, highlighted that excessive airfares during peak seasons and emergencies have long been a concern for NRIs and migrant workers. Adv. Jose Abraham of PLC emphasized that air travel is essential for expatriates to maintain connections with their families and communities.
## Broader Mandate
Beyond airfare regulation, PLC is committed to addressing broader issues affecting Indian expatriates, such as migrant workers' rights and access to justice. The organization continues to work with its chapters across the Gulf to advocate for fair airfares and other concerns impacting the Indian diaspora.
