## FIFA's Assurance
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed confidence in Mexico's ability to host the upcoming World Cup, despite recent violence linked to the capture of a drug cartel leader. Infantino, speaking in Barranquilla, Colombia, reassured that the tournament would proceed smoothly and be "spectacular."
## Recent Unrest
The violence erupted after the Mexican army captured Nemesio "El Mencho" Oseguera, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel. The operation led to clashes, particularly affecting Guadalajara, one of the World Cup host cities. At least 74 people died, with widespread disruptions as cartel members blocked roads and set vehicles ablaze.
## Safety Concerns
While FIFA remains optimistic, the Portuguese Football Federation is cautious, monitoring the situation closely before deciding on a scheduled friendly match in Mexico City. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum assured that there is "no risk" to fans, and the situation is stabilizing.
## Impact on Local Industry
The unrest has also impacted local industries, with Honda temporarily suspending operations at its Guadalajara plant as a precaution. Guadalajara, along with Mexico City and Monterrey, is set to host several World Cup matches, including a key game between Uruguay and Spain.
## Looking Ahead
Despite the challenges, Mexican authorities and FIFA are committed to ensuring the safety and success of the tournament. The focus remains on maintaining security and returning to normalcy ahead of the World Cup events.
