Strikes kill 19 in Russia and Ukraine

## Rising Civilian Casualties

Recent drone and missile attacks have resulted in 19 fatalities across Russia and Ukraine, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict. Both nations have intensified long-range strikes targeting each other's cities and infrastructure, leading to the highest civilian death tolls since the early months of the war in 2022.

## Attacks in Russia

In Russia, Ukrainian drones targeted several regions, including Rostov, Belgorod, Kursk, and Moscow, killing a total of eight people. The Rostov region alone saw five casualties. Moscow's governor described the drone assault as one of the largest in recent memory, with Russia's defense ministry claiming to have intercepted 822 drones overnight.

## Strikes in Ukraine

Ukraine faced severe attacks as well, with Russian drones and missiles hitting Kryvyi Rih, President Zelensky's hometown, killing three people and injuring 14 at a major steel plant. Additional strikes in Zaporizhzhia, Sumy, and Donetsk regions resulted in further casualties. In Kyiv, a popular book market was destroyed, leaving bookseller Dmytro Semenukha devastated.

## International Implications

The conflict's impact is spilling over into Europe. A Spanish F-18 fighter jet, part of NATO forces, shot down a drone that breached Romanian airspace. Similar incidents have occurred in Latvia, highlighting the growing regional threat.

## Economic Targets

Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian economic assets, including warehouses of the online retailer Wildberries, which allegedly supplies drone components. These strikes aim to weaken Russia's war economy, with around 20 such facilities hit since mid-July.

## Humanitarian Impact

The United Nations reported 437 civilian deaths in Ukraine in July, the highest monthly figure since May 2022. Meanwhile, Russia reported 79 civilian deaths in the same period, reflecting the conflict's escalating human toll.
