## Major Rail Upgrade Announced
Pakistan is set to embark on a significant $2.5 billion upgrade of its Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway corridor. The project aims to enhance the Karachi to Rohri section, enabling trains to reach speeds of up to 160 km/h. This section is crucial as it handles a substantial portion of the country's rail traffic, including 76% of passenger and 98% of freight services.
## Project Details
The first phase of the ML-1 upgrade will cover a 480 km stretch from Karachi to Rohri. Key improvements include laying new tracks, installing fencing to prevent unauthorized access, and upgrading stations and freight yards. The project also plans to enhance signalling and telecommunications systems.
## Timeline and Financing
Construction is expected to begin by January 2027, with completion anticipated within three years. The Asian Development Bank is likely to finance the project, with additional funding being explored from other international institutions.
## Strategic Importance
The Karachi-Rohri section was chosen due to its critical role in the rail network and frequent derailments caused by ageing infrastructure. The upgrade is expected to significantly improve safety and efficiency, reducing accidents and enhancing overall rail performance.
## Next Steps
Pakistan Railways is preparing for an early market engagement session on September 8, inviting global contractors to participate. The project review phase is targeted for completion by October 30, 2026, with weekly progress monitoring to ensure timely execution.
