UAE researchers develop first benchmark for AI across 13 Arab dialects

Researchers at the Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI) in the UAE have developed a pioneering benchmark to assess AI's understanding of Arab culture and dialects. This initiative addresses a significant gap in AI's ability to comprehend and engage with the diverse linguistic landscape of the Arab world.

## The Challenge

Arabic, spoken by over 400 million people globally, presents a challenge for AI development due to its reliance on Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) for training. This often results in AI models that perform well in tests but struggle with real-world conversations in various dialects.

## ArabCulture-Dialogue Benchmark

The newly developed ArabCulture-Dialogue benchmark evaluates AI models on their ability to handle multi-turn conversations in both MSA and 13 national dialects. The research involved 26 native speakers from 13 countries, creating dialogues on topics like weddings, food, and arts.

## Findings

The study revealed that while AI models could identify culturally appropriate responses, their performance dropped when required to produce specific dialects. North African and Emirati dialects posed particular challenges. The models succeeded in generating the correct dialect only about half the time.

## Implications

This research is strategically important for the UAE, aligning with its National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031. It highlights the need for AI systems that truly understand the cultural and linguistic diversity of the Arab world, beyond just supporting Arabic.
