## Festive Atmosphere in Kabul
Kabul witnessed a lively celebration as supporters of the Taliban marked five years since the group's return to power. The event, held on August 15, 2026, featured dancing, music, and patriotic displays, with many taking selfies to capture the moment. The festivities took place near the former U.S. embassy, a symbolic location given the chaotic withdrawal of foreign forces in 2021.
## Patriotic Displays and Public Sentiment
Participants waved the Taliban's white flag and expressed hope for Afghanistan's future under the current government. Mohammad Daud Rahmani, a businessman from Kandahar, shared his optimism, urging international engagement with the Taliban. The celebration included traditional attan dancing and symbolic displays, such as toy guns and dummy fuel canisters, reminiscent of the Taliban's past insurgency tactics.
## Security and Public Reactions
The event was heavily attended by men and children, with some dressed in military-style attire. Security personnel mingled with the crowd, and military helicopters flew overhead. Asif Khan Barakzai, a local resident, praised the Taliban for the "peaceful atmosphere" in the country, expressing a sense of calmness and comfort.
## National Holiday Observance
The government declared the day a national holiday, leading to closed shops and reduced traffic in Kabul. Celebrations were concentrated in specific areas, including a square where traditional dances took place. Despite the festive mood, some parts of the city, particularly near the former Green Zone, remained quiet.
