EGA takes Dh725 million hit from Al Taweelah attack, production recovery stretches into 2027

## Impact of Al Taweelah Shutdown

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) reported a significant financial setback due to an attack on its Al Taweelah facility in March, resulting in a Dh725 million hit to its net income for the first half of 2026. The incident led to an emergency shutdown, with aluminium production expected to fully recover by early 2027.

## Production and Financial Performance

The disruption caused a notable decline in production and sales. EGA's cast metal output dropped to 1.006 million tonnes from 1.420 million tonnes the previous year, while aluminium sales fell by 32% to 939,000 tonnes. Revenue decreased to Dh13.54 billion, down from Dh15.07 billion, primarily due to reduced sales volumes.

Despite these challenges, EGA's adjusted net profit increased by 34% year-on-year to Dh2.46 billion, aided by higher aluminium prices and cost controls. The company's adjusted EBITDA rose by 11% to Dh4.50 billion.

## Recovery Efforts

EGA has restarted 18% of Al Taweelah's reduction cells, with full production anticipated by the first quarter of 2027. The company is investing approximately Dh1.5 billion in restoring the facility, with most expenditures planned for 2026.

## Shipment Challenges and Solutions

The regional conflict also impacted EGA's shipping capabilities, temporarily halting outbound shipments from the UAE. However, EGA has developed alternative export routes to mitigate reliance on the Strait of Hormuz, gradually increasing shipment capacity.

## Future Plans and Expansion

EGA is advancing its global expansion plans, including a new aluminium plant in Oklahoma and acquiring a majority stake in Italian recycler Eco Green. The company aims to enhance its aluminium recycling footprint and expects to close the Eco Green acquisition later this quarter.
