Bybit sues North Korea over $1.5 billion crypto hack, wins court-ordered asset freeze

## Bybit's Legal Action Against North Korea

Cryptocurrency exchange Bybit has taken legal action against North Korea, its intelligence agency, and the Lazarus Group, following a massive $1.5 billion cyberattack in February 2025. The lawsuit, filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia, has resulted in a court-ordered freeze on assets linked to the attack.

## Asset Recovery Efforts

Bybit has successfully recovered approximately $48.4 million of the stolen funds and has frozen an additional $30.5 million across various exchanges and custodians. The company is working with blockchain analytics firms and international law enforcement to trace and recover the remaining assets.

## Details of the Cyberattack

The attack involved the theft of around 401,000 Ethereum tokens. Hackers compromised a supplier's system, redirecting funds to a wallet they controlled. Bybit has since replenished the stolen assets through investor loans and launched a bounty program to track the stolen crypto.

## Ongoing Investigations

The civil lawsuit is separate from ongoing criminal investigations by US authorities, including the FBI. Bybit continues to collaborate with law enforcement, sharing intelligence to aid in the investigation. The company remains committed to pursuing further legal actions to recover the stolen assets.
