## Visa Revocations Target Criminal Activity and Social Media
The Trump administration has revoked more than 175,000 visas as part of a significant immigration crackdown. The US State Department announced that these revocations were largely due to criminal offenses, visa violations, and threats to national security. Crimes such as assault, theft, and drug offenses were among the primary reasons for the visa cancellations.
## Social Media and Political Statements Under Scrutiny
The crackdown also extended to individuals whose social media activity was deemed threatening. Several visas were revoked from foreign nationals who made inflammatory political statements, including comments celebrating the assassination of a conservative activist.
## Birth Tourism and Other Concerns
Efforts to curb birth tourism led to the revocation of over 100 visas. This practice involves traveling to the US to give birth, thereby securing citizenship for the child. The administration has increased scrutiny on such activities as part of its broader immigration enforcement strategy.
## Increased Visa Screening Measures
Since January, the number of revoked visas has risen significantly. The administration has implemented stricter visa screening processes, including expanded social media checks. While these measures aim to enhance national security, they have faced criticism from rights advocates who argue they may infringe on free speech and privacy.
## State Department's Stance
The State Department emphasized that a US visa is a privilege, not a right, and reiterated its commitment to identifying and revoking visas of individuals considered threats to public safety. The department stated that under the leadership of President Trump and Secretary Rubio, these efforts will continue.
