Egypt's National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA) has taken decisive action against all mobile network operators in the country. The move comes after investigations revealed that SIM cards were being registered in citizens' names without their knowledge or consent. This discovery prompted the NTRA to refer these operators to the Public Prosecution.

## New Measures to Tighten Controls

In response to these violations, the NTRA has introduced a series of emergency measures. These include suspending the sale and activation of new SIM cards through corporate systems and requiring telecom companies to verify the identities of their customers. Operators must also notify users with older records to update their information by visiting company branches.

The issue is particularly concerning as mobile numbers in Egypt are integral to various digital services, such as mobile wallets and government services. Many Egyptians have expressed their concerns on social media, with some filing police reports to avoid potential legal issues.

## Current Mobile Landscape

As of December, Egypt had approximately 123 million mobile subscriptions. The country's mobile services are provided by Orange Egypt, Vodafone Egypt, e& Egypt, and WE.
