## Oil Spill Extent and Response
An oil slick from the grounded ship Caroline Bezengi near Oman's Al Hallaniyat Islands has spread over approximately 390 square kilometers. The slick is moving northeast towards the mainland, with the closest point being about seven kilometers from the shore. Emergency teams are actively working to contain the spill and secure the vessel.
## Monitoring and Forecasting
Oman's Environment Authority is using satellite imagery and technical analysis to monitor the situation. The slick has been observed along a 449-kilometer track, and it is predicted to advance up to 121 kilometers in the next 48 hours, influenced by weather conditions. The forecast is based on scientific models and may change.
## Environmental Concerns
Authorities are focusing on protecting sensitive marine habitats, including coral reefs and turtle nesting areas. Continuous monitoring is in place to ensure no threat to vital coastal facilities such as desalination plants and aquaculture projects.
## Challenges and Measures
The Ministry of Transport is assessing the ship's hull damage and preparing to transfer its oil cargo safely. Operations are complicated by challenging weather conditions during the Khareef season, although these conditions have also helped keep the oil away from the coast. Aircraft and marine surveys are being used to track the pollution continuously.
