## Rising Tensions and Security Concerns
The Strait of Hormuz is currently experiencing heightened security threats due to escalating tensions between the US and Iran. Since March 1, there have been 84 recorded incidents, including a recent attack on an ADNOC tanker on August 8. Maritime authorities warn that further hostile actions are likely.
## Decline in Ship Traffic
Tanker traffic through the Strait has significantly decreased, with only 40 US-facilitated transits recorded between August 6 and 8. This is a stark contrast to the daily average of 138 vessels in 2025. On August 8, only eight cargo ships and two tankers crossed the Strait.
## Iranian Military Activity
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is actively monitoring the area, employing drones and surveillance. There have been reports of projectile strikes and near-miss explosions near Omani waters. Additionally, uncharted mines and GPS signal disruptions pose further risks to navigation.
## US Military Response
In response to the situation, the US Navy has increased its presence in the Gulf of Oman. As of August 9, 53 commercial vessels have been redirected, two disabled, and two boarded for compliance checks. Ships are advised to keep their AIS systems on unless a security threat necessitates otherwise.
## Broader Regional Risks
The Strait of Hormuz is not the only area of concern. Other regional waterways, such as the Gulf of Oman and Bab el-Mandeb, also face substantial threats, including piracy and electronic interference. The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) advises heightened vigilance for vessels operating in these areas.
