## Rising Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is experiencing increased security threats as tensions between the US and Iran escalate. Since March 1, there have been 84 reported incidents, including a recent attack on an ADNOC tanker on August 8. This has led to warnings from maritime authorities about the likelihood of further hostile actions.
## Decline in Ship Traffic
Tanker traffic through the Strait has significantly decreased, with only 40 US-facilitated transits recorded between August 6 and 8, compared to an average of 138 vessels per day in 2025. On August 8, only eight cargo vessels and two tankers crossed the Strait.
## Iranian Military Activity
Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is actively monitoring the area, using drones and surveillance to track merchant vessels. There have been reports of projectile strikes and near-miss explosions near the southern Omani approaches.
## Ongoing Risks
The presence of uncharted mines and GPS signal interference continues to pose risks to navigation. The US Navy has increased its presence in the Gulf of Oman, redirecting and boarding vessels for compliance checks.
## Broader Regional Concerns
Other waterways, including the Gulf of Oman and the Bab el-Mandeb, are also facing elevated risks due to piracy and regional conflicts. The Joint Maritime Information Center (JMIC) advises vessels to remain vigilant and prepared for potential navigation disruptions and security checks.
