Expired milk, fungus on veggies: Bengaluru 5-star hotels face action

## Surprise Inspections Reveal Violations

A recent food safety inspection in Bengaluru has uncovered serious violations in several three-star and five-star hotels. The inspections, conducted by Karnataka’s Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, found expired food items, fungal growth on vegetables, and unhygienic storage practices.

## Details of the Inspection

The department deployed 30 teams to inspect 26 hotels, collecting 35 food samples for laboratory testing. Violations included improper food labeling, misbranding, and inadequate segregation of vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. The inspections also checked compliance with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) labeling requirements.

## Legal Action and Future Inspections

Notices have been issued to the hotels found in violation, and adjudication proceedings will be initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The crackdown follows a rise in public complaints about food quality and safety violations. Further inspections are planned across Karnataka, targeting hotels, restaurants, and other food outlets, with potential legal consequences for serious breaches.
