## Security Concerns Halt Avocado Inspections
Mexican avocado exports to the United States have been suspended once again due to security threats in Michoacan, a key avocado-producing region. The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) halted inspections, which are essential for export, following unspecified threats to US interests.
## Increased Security Measures
In response, Mexico has deployed an additional 1,500 troops to Michoacan to enhance security and facilitate the resumption of exports. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized the importance of these measures to mitigate economic impacts and ensure a steady supply to the US, which relies heavily on Mexican avocados.
## Economic Impact
The US is a major consumer of Mexican avocados, with over 80% of its supply coming from Mexico, generating $3.7 billion in sales in 2025. The suspension of inspections could lead to price increases in the US market.
## Cartel Influence
Michoacan is plagued by cartel activity, which affects various industries, including avocados. Past incidents have involved violence against USDA inspectors, prompting temporary export halts. The current suspension is preventive, following arrests related to extortion.
## Limited Export Options
While Michoacan is the primary exporter, Jalisco is the only other Mexican state authorized to export avocados to the US, but its production is significantly smaller. The situation is typically resolved quickly to minimize economic damage to both countries.
