Hiring a domestic worker in the UAE? Here's what you need to know

## Recruitment Options

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) in the UAE has outlined two primary methods for hiring domestic workers: through licensed recruitment agencies or direct recruitment. Each method comes with distinct procedures, legal protections, and responsibilities.

## Licensed Agencies

Recruiting through licensed agencies offers legal safeguards under the Domestic Workers Law. These agencies provide a two-year guarantee covering situations like worker absconding or refusal to work. Employers can also recover part of the recruitment costs if a worker leaves without a valid reason after the probation period.

## Direct Recruitment

Opting for direct recruitment means the employer assumes full responsibility for the hiring process. This method does not offer the legal guarantees available through licensed agencies, and employers are responsible for all recruitment procedures and any arising legal issues.

## Regulatory Framework

The UAE has 138 licensed recruitment agencies, all subject to strict oversight by MoHRE. This ensures compliance with legal standards and promotes best practices. The ministry encourages using licensed agencies to reduce risks and ensure proper worker screening and contract verification.

## Employer Responsibilities

Employers must understand the differences between the two recruitment options. Licensed agencies offer comprehensive legal protections and support, while direct recruitment provides flexibility but places full responsibility on the employer. MoHRE continues to enhance its digital services to streamline recruitment processes and improve transparency.
