Six years after Beirut port blast, victims’ families say ‘wound has not healed’

## Commemoration and Demand for Accountability

On the sixth anniversary of the Beirut port explosion, families of the victims gathered to demand justice and accountability. The tragic event on August 4, 2020, resulted in over 220 deaths and more than 6,500 injuries, devastating large parts of the city.

Despite the passage of time, no one has been held accountable for the explosion, which was caused by a fire in a warehouse storing ammonium nitrate. Families continue to push for answers about who was responsible for the storage and detonation of the chemicals.

## Legal Proceedings

Judge Tarek Bitar completed his investigation involving around 70 defendants, including politicians and officials. The case is currently with the public prosecutor, who is expected to refer it back to Bitar for an indictment within 60 to 90 days.

## Political Challenges

The investigation faced delays due to political interference, including demands for Bitar's removal. However, changes in Lebanon's political landscape have allowed the investigation to progress.
