## Delhi High Court's Decision
Indian expatriates in the UAE are optimistic about a potential reduction in passport fees following a recent directive from the Delhi High Court. The court has instructed the Indian government to review a petition challenging the increased fees within three weeks.
## Impact on Workers
The fee hike, effective from July 1, has significantly impacted low-income workers, particularly those renewing passports through Indian missions in the Gulf. The renewal cost rose from Dh280 to Dh450, a substantial burden for many earning modest salaries.
## Pravasi Legal Cell's Role
The Pravasi Legal Cell (PLC), a group advocating for overseas Indians, filed the petition. They argue that the revised fees disproportionately affect blue-collar workers. The PLC has been active in addressing issues faced by Indian expats for over a decade.
## Awaiting Government Response
With the court's deadline approaching, PLC members remain hopeful for a favorable decision. They emphasize the need for a more affordable fee structure, especially for labor categories. If the government's response is unsatisfactory, the PLC plans to challenge it further.
