## Devastating Earthquakes Hit Venezuela

In June, Venezuela experienced two powerful earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, resulting in the deaths of 6,125 people. The quakes caused significant destruction, particularly in the coastal state of La Guaira, where nearly 200 buildings collapsed.

## Thousands Injured and Missing

The earthquakes left approximately 17,000 people injured. Rescue operations are ongoing as teams search for survivors and victims in the rubble. Reports indicate that around 1,400 individuals are still missing, with some estimates suggesting the number could be as high as 10,000.

## Displacement and Housing Crisis

The disaster has displaced nearly 24,000 residents in La Guaira and Caracas, forcing them into temporary shelters. In response, Venezuelan lawmakers have passed a new law to facilitate property rentals, aiming to assist those affected by the quakes. Interim leader Delcy Rodriguez announced plans to provide 4,000 homes to victims by the end of the year, with a goal of exceeding 10,000 homes by 2027.

## Government Response

The interim government, under close observation from Washington following the removal of former leader Nicolas Maduro, is actively working to address the crisis. The new rental law is seen as a crucial step in providing relief to the displaced population.
