Egypt launches QR code tourist visa system

## New Visa System at Cairo Airport

Egypt has implemented a QR code-based tourist visa system at Cairo International Airport, effective from August 1, 2026. This initiative allows travelers to obtain visas digitally either before their journey or upon arrival.

## Streamlining Entry Procedures

The new system aims to modernize border procedures, reduce waiting times, and improve the overall arrival experience by replacing traditional visa stickers with digital QR codes. Visitors can purchase tourist visas online, via a government app, or at self-service kiosks in the airport.

## Part of Broader Tourism Strategy

Sherif Fathy, Egypt's Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, stated that this system is part of a larger strategy to enhance Egypt's tourism sector through digital services and efficient immigration processes. Eligible travelers can generate digital entry permits up to 48 hours before departure.

## Eligibility and Future Plans

Currently, nationals from 118 countries can obtain visas on arrival, while 170 to 180 nationalities benefit from various visa facilitation measures. Expanding eligibility will depend on security assessments and reciprocal agreements with other nations.
