India's RBI tightens rules on bank deposit interest rates

## RBI's New Guidelines

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced revised guidelines for bank deposit interest rates, effective from October 1. These changes aim to enhance transparency and ensure consistent treatment for depositors across various banks.

## Key Changes

Under the new rules, banks must disclose interest rates for all deposits, including bulk deposits, in advance on their websites. For bulk deposits, the rates must be published by 10:00 am on each business day, with a grace period of 10 minutes.

## Uniformity Across Branches

The RBI mandates that interest rates must be uniform across all branches and for all customers. Banks cannot offer different rates for deposits of the same amount made on the same day at different branches.

## Flexibility for Bulk Deposits

While ensuring uniformity, the RBI allows banks some flexibility in setting rates for bulk deposits. Banks can offer different rates for bulk deposits, considering factors like the Liquidity Coverage Ratio framework.

## Impact on Fixed Deposit Rates

The guidelines do not specify any changes to fixed deposit interest rates from October 1. Rates will continue to be determined by individual banks based on liquidity, funding needs, and market conditions. The changes are expected to improve transparency without immediately affecting retail fixed deposit rates.
