## Aerial Seeding Initiative
Abu Dhabi is embarking on a large-scale environmental restoration project, aiming to disperse 10 million native seeds across its deserts. This initiative, led by the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), seeks to rehabilitate natural habitats, enhance biodiversity, and strengthen ecosystem resilience against climate change and desertification.
## Use of Advanced Technologies
The project employs drones, satellite imagery, and artificial intelligence to identify optimal seeding locations and monitor progress. These technologies help ensure the seeds are dispersed in areas where they are most likely to thrive, based on soil characteristics and environmental conditions.
## Focus on Native Species
The seeds selected for this project include native species such as Ghaf, Samar, and Thamam, which are well-adapted to the harsh desert environment. These plants are chosen for their ability to survive with minimal water and support local wildlife.
## Long-term Monitoring
Post-seeding, the EAD will monitor the sites for up to two years using remote sensing and field surveys. This will help evaluate germination rates and vegetation growth, allowing for adjustments to improve outcomes.
## Environmental Benefits
The initiative aims to restore native vegetation, improve soil quality, and increase carbon sequestration. By doing so, it supports Abu Dhabi's broader goals of sustainability and biodiversity conservation, while also reducing desertification and sandstorms.
